CHAPTER 15

“What do you mean, she left? When? Why?” Nicole’s voice carried the exact same bafflement Sadie had felt at four that morning. And was still feeling.

Sadie sighed and gazed, unseeing, at the lake before her. She’d got up way too early, her sleep from four onwards plagued with unsettling and disturbing dreams. Giving up at six, she’d taken herself out for an early run to try and clear the upsetting thoughts that filled her brain, but it hadn’t worked. After showering, she’d slipped out of the hotel’s back door, not in any hurry to confront Holly about her baffling departure during the night. She’d ridden out to the lake again and was slumped on a bench overlooking the water, the calmness of the morning only occasionally broken by a morning jogger.

“And what, no note, no text message to explain?”

“What is there to explain?” Sadie snapped, her anger and frustration spilling over. “She got what she wanted, didn’t she? And me, idiot that I am, thought there was more to it than just a one-night stand. God, I am so stupid,” she groaned and hung her head.

Nicole huffed out a breath. “But, that’s the thing, Sades. From everything you told me about how this week has gone with you two, this just makes no fucking sense at all. She was really into you. Really. So there has to be another explanation as to why she left. Maybe she was ill?”

“If that was the case, why didn’t she just wake me, huh? No, I know what this is. It’s happened before, so I know what it feels like. This is me reading it all wrong again and putting my heart at risk when I didn’t need to. This is the universe telling me I don’t get to do this. I don’t get to find that one, like you’ve found Tash.”

“Shit, get off the fucking pity bus, will you?” Nicole’s sharp words sliced into Sadie, causing her breath to catch in her throat. “Sorry, maybe that was a bit harsh,” Nicole continued quietly, after a moment. “But, honestly, I think there’s something more to this. I really, really don’t think this is her using you and then throwing you away. Please, promise me you’ll talk to her. Don’t just walk away from this. Find out what happened last night before you write this off. Please?”

Sadie sighed and rubbed her free hand through her hair. Maybe Nic was right. Maybe there was an outside chance it wasn’t as bad as she feared. She tried hard not to build up her hopes, given it was gone eight o’clock and she’d still heard nothing from Holly, despite knowing she’d been at work for nearly an hour. But she’d promised herself these past couple of days that she would stop running from situations she couldn’t handle. She just had to grit her teeth and get on with it.

“Okay, I’ll talk to her. I promise.”

Nicole’s relieved exhalation hissed down the line. “Cool. And when you know what’s going on, let me know too, okay? I’m there whenever you need me, remember?”

“I know.
